4 seized for lottery frauds via phone messages
FOUR suspects had been detained for alleged telecom scams, pretending as staff of a popular TV program and swindling victims of postage and insurance fees for non-existent lotteries, police said.
The gang started the scam in 2006 and committed 122 frauds involving more than 700,000 yuan (US$105,023).
Police said the gang would send group messages randomly, saying the receivers had won the "Feichang 6+1," a popular lottery show on CCTV, police said. When the victims called, they would keep deceiving the victims and ask them to transfer postage and insurance fees for the prize.
The four were caught in September in their house in Hainan Province.
