4 suspects sold fake iPhones, watches

CITY police busted a gang that sold fake iPhone cellphones and other counterfeit goods of famous brands.

Police said yesterday they caught four suspects and seized over 40 fake iPhones, including the iPhone 4.

Hundreds of fake goods including cellphones and watches, as well as more than 2,000 rechargeable cellphone cards, were confiscated, adding up to more than 200,000 yuan (US$31,449) based on market value.

The suspects delivered the goods through delivery companies, making them harder to trace since the companies did not know what was inside the packages, said police.

Customers paid on delivery, police said. The delivery companies were not involved in the scheme.

"What's tricky is that the gang's sources of the fake goods have already been cut by the police," said a police officer, surnamed Ma, with local Qingpu District police.

In June, police caught a company that distributed goods to the suspects.

"Obviously the gang managed to hide the goods in private," said officers.

The gang also had a customer list that it used to expand its business.
