4 welders detained for causing deadly fire
THE fire that killed 53 in a residential high-rise in downtown Jing'an District yesterday was caused by four unlicensed welders working on the scaffolding on the 10th floor, according to an initial investigation. The four workers have been detained by police.
The fire also injured 70, 17 of them in critical condition, the Shanghai government said this morning.
The 28-floor building at the intersection of Jiaozhou Road and Yuyao Road was undergoing a face-lift and was surrounded by scaffoldings which caused the fire to spread swiftly.
The injured people are receiving treatment at nine Shanghai hospitals, including the renowned Ruijin Hospital, Huashan Hospital and Changzheng Hospital.
