4 women get jail for fake goods

FOUR college graduates were given nine months to one year in prison with a one-year reprieve for selling counterfeit luxury bags, wallets and related products with brands such as Louis Vuitton, Gucci and Loewe, the Zhabei District People's Court ruled yesterday.

The four women, all in their 20s, were also fined from 3,000 yuan (US$485) to 5,000 yuan under the court ruling.

Prosecutors said the four women worked at a store in a Metro station after graduation. They knew the store bought counterfeit luxury items from illegal vendors but helped sell them to customers. Between August 2011 and March 2012, they sold fake luxury brand products, the court heard.

The four women were caught by police last month with 196 counterfeit LV bags seized at the shop. Examiners from LV confirmed the bags were all fakes. The gap in price of real bags and the fake LV ones was calculated at 1.46 million yuan, officials said.

The court rendered a criminal verdict due to the volume involved, but gave them a reprieve since they confessed and most of the bags weren't yet sold.
