42 confirmed killed after fire engulfs apartment tower
SHANGHAI government said by 10pm yesterday, 42 people have been confirmed dead during the downtown high-rise apartment fire in Jing'an District.
The 28-story building at the intersection of Jiaozhou Road and Yuyao Road in Jing'an District was being renovated when it caught fire at about 2:15 pm.
The fire was mostly extinguished at 6:30pm. Fire fighters are searching for survivors in the building, the statement said.
The number of injured people is not immediately known. But nearby hospitals have received more than 90 rescued people.
Local authorities are investigating the cause of the accident. Rescue work is under way, the statement said.
China's Public Security Minister Meng Jianzhu is flying to Shanghai to lead the investigation.
