42-million-yuan embezzler sentenced to life

THE boss of a state-owned construction supervision company was sentenced to life in prison today by the Shanghai No. 2 Intermediate People's Court for embezzling 42 million yuan (US$6.6 million).
Wu Xiaoli, 74, was the general manager of Shanghai Gongxin Project Construction Supervision Center Ltd from 1994 to 2010. She embezzled public funds when the state-owned company was changed into a private enterprise between 2008 and 2010.
Prosecutors said Wu also stole 1.42 million yuan of the company's supervision fees, and faked labor contracts to embezzle 600,000 yuan by paying nonexistent employees.
In a previous hearing in February, Wu admitted making false labor contracts and creating nonexistent positions, but denied embezzling 46 million yuan.
The elderly women said she had no idea about the embezzled money as she worked only two days a week at the company after she turned 70.
