48 public venues slapped with smoking fines
Law enforcement personnel fined 48 businesses and six individuals for violating the city's smoking ban in the first 18 months since the regulation was enacted last March, officials said today.
The income from fines totaled about 120,600 yuan (US$18,970), according to the Shanghai Patriotic Health Campaign Commission.
Officials said Internet cafes, entertainment venues and restaurants are still places badly affected by smoking.
The city imposed a ban on smoking in public places on March 1 last year. The new law covers 12 kinds of public places, including schools, hospitals, theaters and other entertainment venues. It forbids indoor smoking in government offices.
