5 cyclists injured by rookie driver

FIVE cyclists were injured when a car driven by an inexperienced motorist plowed into them in the Pudong New Area yesterday afternoon, police said.

Two cyclists were in a critical condition last night while the others suffered lighter injuries, officers said.

The driver, surnamed Xu, 23, obtained her driving license two years ago but was still a rookie driver, police said.

The accident happened at around 1pm at the intersection of Chuanzhou Highway and Xiuchuan Road.

Xu's car hit one bicycle and then continued at high speed to strike the four other cyclists, police said.

One of the seriously injured, a 37-year-old surnamed Tan from Chongqing City, suffered head injuries.

According to preliminary police investigations, Xu mishandled the car due to her inexperience in driving.
