5 held after man beaten to death on busy street

POLICE are questioning five men in connection with an incident in which a man was beaten to death in front of shocked members of the public in Zhabei District yesterday afternoon.

Officers said the victim, an Anhui Province native surnamed Wu, was killed at the intersection of Baoshan and Baoyang roads at about 2pm.

According to police, Wu had a dispute with his wife in a courier company office, and his wife's brother led a group that chased and killed Wu.

Witnesses said Wu ran out of the office with a gang in pursuit. After they caught up and confronted him, the men began beating Wu on a grass area at the intersection.

Wu was knocked unconscious as they punched and kicked him, witnesses said.

"I saw the victim arguing with two gang members on the grass and then they started beating him," said a resident surnamed Zhang.

"Soon more gang members arrived and joined the attack, beating the man for several minutes."

After the gang fled, some of the large crowd who had gathered came to Wu's aid and called the emergency services, Zhang said.

"I heard the gang shouting, "beat him to death" during the attack," said a witness, surnamed Su,

"As we waited for the ambulance, I didn't think he would make it as he wasn't responding, though I couldn't see any blood," Su said.

Some witnesses said they believed fierce competition between courier company workers led to the fight.

It was claimed that packages were scattered around the area where Wu was killed.

Investigations are continuing.
