5 taken to hospital after gas leak under houses
FIVE people were taken to hospital early yesterday morning after a gas leak in Xuhui District.
They were said to be in stable condition last night after emergency treatment at Xuhui District Central Hospital.
Shanghai Dazhong Gas Co Ltd said the leak was in a pipe under Nanchang Road.
"The road was just repaired and it was near a construction site," an official from the company said yesterday.
The pipe has been fixed and the cause of the leak is still under investigation.
The leak affected houses at 591, 593 and 597 Nanchang Road.
An old couple in 593, a 38-year-old shopkeeper in a convenience store at 597 and a couple at 591 were found poisoned in their rooms, the hospital said.
A 34-year-old victim surnamed Sun, still weak but stable after treatment in a hyperbaric oxygen chamber, said he was woken by his wife snoring in her sleep, something which she had never done before.
"I touched her mouth and I found it was all wet," Sun said. "When I turned on the light, I saw her foaming at the mouth and she looked very pale."
Sun got up and called an ambulance.
"I thought it was food poisoning," Sun said.
"I suddenly passed out after I dressed up.
"When I woke up, I was already in the hospital," he said.
