507 cloned taxis caught in Shanghai this year
SHANGHAI traffic authorities said today they have seized 507 cloned taxis so far this year.
The Shanghai Traffic Law Enforcement Team said illegal taxi operation was suppressed with continued crackdown conducted around Metro stations, transportation hubs and business areas.
The watchdog said it is now targeting illegal used-car markets where retired taxis are traded against the rules.
Cloned taxis are those that look exactly the same as the licensed ones and they cheat customers without leaving any trace for punishment, the officials said.
They said retired taxis must have their logos, color codes and other business equipment removed before they can be sold again.
But in real practice, retired taxi cars were sold to unlicensed cabbies without making any changes and they hit the road again as cloned taxis, the officials said.
