6-year hunt for murder and kidnap suspect

A MAN suspected of being involved in separate cases of murder and kidnap has been apprehended after a six-year hunt, city police said yesterday.

Han Kelong is alleged to have helped kill an unlicensed taxi driver, surnamed Zheng, in the city's suburban Jiading District in May 2005.

Han, along with three other people, is said to have planned to rob the driver but stabbed Zheng to death after he fought back fiercely.

Police said the gang later set fire to Zheng's body and car in a nearby cemetery.

A witness saw the fire and alerted police. Officers discovered the cabbie's body and three knives in the vehicle.

Three people involved in the killing were captured in the following year. But the fourth suspect, Han, could not be traced.

Before killing Zheng, in the same month the gang allegedly kidnapped a man, surnamed Kong, in Nanjing, capital of Jiangsu Province.

Kong, an ex-boyfriend of a female gang member, surnamed Li, traveled in Nanjing, after Li called him saying she was depressed.

But as the pair climbed Youzi Mountain in the city, two men appeared and took them to a forest in Chuzhou, Anhui Province.

Kong was made to strip naked and photographs were taken of him with Li to blackmail him. He was forced to write a letter pledging 300,000 yuan (US$47,010) before being released.

After receiving threatening calls telling him to pay up, Kong called the police.

For six years, Han and his wife lived under false identities in Anhui's Huaiyuan County, according to police.

Han was apprehended on October 11, said officers.
