7 held over Jiading gang fight

POLICE in suburban Jiading District have detained seven men in connection with the death of a 24-year-old man who was hit and run over by an SUV during a suspected gang fight on Monday, police said yesterday.

The driver of the SUV, a man surnamed Chen, was among those detained.

According to police, the incident took place at about 4:05am on Monday at an intersection when a black Audi carrying a Zhejiang Province plate stopped and parked right in front of an unlicensed SUV, blocking its way.

Two groups of men jumped off from each of the vehicles and started fighting each other with long knives.

Then the driver, Chen, started the engine of the SUV and rammed into the Audi.

The SUV then backed up and Chen drove back to the intersection where the two groups were fighting, hitting one of the men from the rival group, surnamed Liu, in high speed and running over his body, police said.
