7 held over top official's death
SEVEN suspects have been detained in connection with the death of a senior Party official in Qingpu District in March.
The main suspect confessed he had planned the attack out of revenge, the Qingpu District government said in a briefing on the case on its Website.
The body of Li Mingyun, 59, a top Party official with Qingpu Industrial Zone, was found in a pool of blood beside his car in an underground parking lot behind his apartment about 8:30am on March 9. He had knife wounds to his chest and hands.
Li was due to attend a meeting at 9:15am that morning, a property manager surnamed Lu said.
Police launched a murder investigation which took officers to Jiangsu, Shandong, Hebei, Shanxi, Anhui, Jiangxi and Heilongjiang provinces and Beijing. The three-month investigation resulted in the detention of a main suspect named Cheng Feng and six accomplices.
Cheng admitted he hired people to take revenge on Li after Li had prevented him winning a project contract, the government briefing said.
Five months earlier, it added, Li had reported to police that he had been beaten up by two unidentified young men in the same parking lot on his way to work in mid-October.
After the attack, the neighborhood's property management company assigned a security guard to patrol the underground parking lot twice a day, when Li left for or returned from work.
On March 9, Li arrived at the lot about 20 minutes later than usual, after the guard had finished morning patrol, Lu said. A female cleaner found Li's body.
Li was nine months from retirement when he was killed. He had been Party secretary for the Qingpu Industrial Zone since 2005.
