7 years for drunk driver who hit cops

A drunk driver who knocked down and seriously injured a traffic police officer while trying to escape punishment was sentenced to seven years and six months in prison for intentional injury, the Songjiang District People's Court ruled yesterday.

The 27-year-old convict, Zhao Huiqiang, was stopped by traffic police officer Qian Yong and his coordinator Wang Deren for a road routine check. A test showed Zhao's blood-alcohol level well over the legal limit, the court said. Qian asked Zhao to stay in the vehicle but the drunken man instead gunned the engine of his minibus and fled.

Qian took severe injuries to his head, face and chest after being hit by the minibus while Wang suffered slight injuries and fractures in his right chest.

Zhao argued that he didn't see the traffic police officer when he started the vehicle.

"It was not on purpose," Zhao told the court.
