8 arrested for blocking police dealing with Metro fare evaders

POLICE said they took eight people under custody yesterday after they interfered in police work dealing with Metro fare evaders.

The suspects allegedly pushed and injured some police officers, witnesses who took the pictures of the incident said.

The incident happened yesterday after the Metro staff caught two passengers, a man and a woman, who tried to get past a turnstile with just one ticket at the Xujiahui Station.

The two, standing close to each other, went through the turnstile but were caught on the spot, said Metro staff, who were forced to call police after the two denied the act despite being presented with surveillance camera footage.

But the two called in several of their friends who tried to hinder police work. They also broke the glass and fire prevention equipment in the station.

Elsewhere, a man's leg was caught between a train and Metro platform during the afternoon rush on Metro Line 2's Jiangsu Road Station, delaying the train for about 10 minutes.

Emergency staff at the station rushed the passenger to hospital.
