8 suspects nabbed for bus pocket-picking
Eight suspects were detained by early this morning for committing a robbery on a bus in Minhang District.
All the eight suspects are veteran theives with criminal records, police announced today.
But the pocket-picking ring were allegedly made of more than 10 members and city police are still chasing other gang members and urged them to surrend.
Police said the gang beat up four passengers who tried to stop them from stealing on the bus. Three of the passengers suffered injuries in the shoulder, abdomen and leg but their conditions were stable.
The four passengers, from Anhui Province, have been commended for their heroic act, the district authorities said today.
The robbery happened at about 4pm on Monday when a bus on Line 729 was pulling into the Xinzhu Road bus stop. A passenger, surnamed Wang, found someone was stealing things from his wife's bag and tried to stop him.
But Wang and his three friends were attracked by men around them. When the gang left, Wang found his three friends were injured.
Seven suspects, all from Chongqing in southwest China, were caught by police yesterday, and the hunt is continuing for other gang members.
Police has reminded people to watch out for pickpockets in the run-up to the Spring Festival, a season of increased thefts as migrant workers rush home.
Shanghai police have nabbed nearly 100 suspects for on-bus thefts since last November and retrieved more than 88,000 yuan (US$13,296) stolen money.
