8 truck drivers sacked and barred from same job
EIGHT construction truck drivers were sacked after killing nine people in eight accidents this year, officials with the Shanghai Greenery and Public Sanitation Bureau said today.
It is the first time that drivers were fired over fatal accidents and they are not allowed to do the same job in the city as a punishment.
Compensation and legal responsibility were handled by traffic police.
Construction trucks caused eight road accidents in the first quarter of this year, leaving nine persons dead and one injured. Officials said mortality rate is higher than the same quarter of last year.
Shanghai Baishun Dirt and Debris Dumping Co was fined 10,000 yuan for not reporting its transportation figures. It became the first company to be fined this year. One of its dump trucks crushed a cyclist in Minhang District on February 17.
Local authorities said they will strengthen the supervision of the city's truck companies, which are forbidden to hire drivers with a record of a major traffic accident.
The government will use a computerized tracking system to monitor each construction truck and their companies and deal out severe punishment if an illegal practice is found.
Starting this week, a citywide inspection will be carried out on construction sites and truck companies, the officials said.
