90 caught in gambling raids
POLICE in Shanghai's Songjiang District said today that they have caught more than 90 people in around 40 gambling cases already this year.
More than 30,000 yuan (US$4,800) was confiscated, officers said.
On Sunday, police raided a billiard hall on Kungang Highway following a tip-off and discovered several gaming machines in a secret room.
The owner of the billiard hall, surnamed Wu, was detained.
In another recent case, 80 people were caught gambling at a warehouse in Maogang area near Wuzhu Highway.
Police said the organizers were experienced, with some members of the team keeping watch and other providing loans to gamblers.
They would also frequently change the gambling venue in an effort to avoid being detected.
Police said they have stepped up street patrols, forcing gamblers to move indoors.
