A dog's ordeal in the fire touches many hearts
A golden retriever left trapped in an apartment when a raging fire engulfed a downtown building on Monday has found its owner thanks to Netizens who circulated photos of firefighters taking care of the dog after its rescue.
The dog, named Jing Jing, lingered around the charred building on Jiaozhou Road in Jing'an District where 53 people died in the inferno and more than 70 were injured.
The family said they found their seven-year-old dog was missing after evacuating from the building.
Some journalists photographed the dog and posted the pictures online. They were quickly retweeted on many websites and finally caught the attention of its owner. The family claimed the dog from the Jing'an District Fire Department yesterday.
"The dog suddenly perked up and jumped toward the visitor…We knew immediately her family is coming," a firefighter recalled the scene of the reunion.
The dog was found by a firefighter who was searching in the building. The photos of the pitiful dog appeared in some newspapers and websites, enabling the family to find it.
Shanghai Daily also published one of the photos on Wednesday, showing the dog looking sad and lying on the sidewalk covered by a coat.
Another widespread photo shows the dog with wet, blackened fur, amid a crowd right behind a police cordon line. "The tail is tucked between legs, showing the dog has been through great terror. Pray it will find its family," wrote a Netizen online.
Witnesses recalled the dog pacing around the fire site and vomited once but wouldn't allow others to approach at first. She finally lay down out of exhaustion and a fire-fighter dropped a coat on her to keep her warm, said witnesses.
The firefighters managed to take her back to their dorm and fed her. But the dog hardly ate anything. Just about she was going to eat, she heard her family coming.
The fire department said many locals had called them, asking for adoption, after seeing photos under the title "a weeping and faithful dog at the fire site" online.
