Acne treatment in a spot of bother with watchdog

AN acne treatment has been banned in the city because it contains antibiotics that are prohibited in cosmetics, city officials said yesterday.

New York Acne Treatment Essence 681 was found to contain high levels of cillimycin - 8,000 micrograms per gram, said the Shanghai Food and Drug Administration.

The treatment had been offered in outlets of New York Skin Solutions in the city.

Under Chinese law, all antibiotics are banned from use in cosmetics, as people using the products can build up resistance to the drugs.

The FDA tested six batches of the products, all of which were found to contain high levels of cillimycin.

The products were manufactured by Jimei Cosmetics Co Ltd in Zhuhai, Guangdong Province, officials said.

Now the FDA has started investigating the New York Skin Solutions, and will strengthen the supervision on cosmetic manufacturers in Guangdong.

The beauty salon is likely to be fined for using unqualified products.

Officials said claims in advertisements for acne-treating products can be misleading.
