Admissions juries for arts colleges to tackle bribe-taking

ARTS colleges in Shanghai have been told to set up juries of experts to decide on student admissions, following complaints of bribe-taking and favoritism.

Under the new policy, each school must have a jury of five or more artistic experts to conduct interviews, said the Shanghai Education Commission yesterday.

At least half must be from outside the school, it added.

Teachers or experts should withdraw from the admissions process if a relatives or student is among applicants, said the commission.

Otherwise, they will be permanently banned from involvement in selecting students.

There have been accusations of corruption in enrollment to arts institutions in recent years.

Last November, a Shanghai Theatre Academy teacher, surnamed Zhuo, was jailed for six years for taking 215,000 yuan (US$34,450) in bribes from two applicants.

A total of 38 colleges in Shanghai are dedicated artistic educational institutions or have arts departments, taking in more than 4,000 freshmen each year.
