Airline passenger caught stealing life jacket

LOCALLY based Spring Airlines called the police after one of its passengers was found stealing a life jacket from a Guangzhou-Shanghai flight as the passenger disembarked from the plane. The passenger may be detained for 15 days as punishment, the budget carrier said today.

The passenger was suspected of removing a civil aviation item without authorization and could be detained up to 15 days, according to Chinese law, a press officer with the airline said.

The life jackets cost about US$80 each but are disposable once they are inflated, a captain with a local airline said.

China Eastern Airlines loses about 6,000 life jackets every year, including many that are taken by passengers to use as inflatable swimming aids, an official with the airline said.
