All chemicals producers to be removed from city center

All local hazardous chemicals producers operating outside industrial parks will be removed to the city's outskirts by the end of next year, local authorities said yesterday.

The city currently has about 300 producers of hazardous chemicals operating outside industrial parks, and 76 of them will be relocated to designated areas by this December, according to the Shanghai Administration of Work Safety.

Another 200-plus companies will finish their relocation in 2012, after which the city's 11,000-plus hazardous chemical producers will mainly gather beyond the Outer Ring Road.
More than 500 such companies have either been shut down or moved over the past five years.

During the first six months of this year, a total 605 people were killed in various work safety accidents, and 10 accidents were at hazardous chemicals companies.

The leak of waste mineral oil by a Jinshan factory and the gas leak caused by an illegal hazardous chemicals company in Jiading District both badly impacted the city's air quality, said the bureau.
