Alleged rapist took his girlfriend hostage
A MAN has been arrested after holding his girlfriend at knifepoint to resist police investigating an alleged rape and robbery.
The Qingpu District People's Procuratorate issued an arrest warrant for the man surnamed Yan on charges of kidnapping, rape and robbery, yesterday's Oriental Morning Post reported.
Yan, 36, a Sichuan Province native, had been living with an Anhui Province native surnamed Zhang. But their love turned sour after Yan took to gambling and they often quarreled.
After the latest argument, in September, Zhang moved out of their home into a hostel.
Yan visited Zhang's friend, surnamed Cheng, on September 22 to ask where Zhang was. During the visit, Zhang phoned Cheng asking her to send some clothes to the hostel. Yan overheard the call and the address.
Before leaving, Yan allegedly raped Cheng in revenge for Cheng scolding him for his quarrels with Zhang.
He is also said to have stolen 1,695 yuan (US$248) in cash as well as a kitchen knife, a mobile phone and a bankcard.
He used the card to withdraw 8,000 yuan from Cheng's account.
He then went to Zhang's hostel to confront her but Cheng had called the police and they arrived at around the same time.
Cornered, Yan kidnapped Zhang and held her hostage at knifepoint in an attempt to evade capture.
It wasn't until eight hours later that police negotiators managed to persuade Yan to give himself up.
