Ambassadors recruited for Silk Road adventure

FROM today, history and archeology enthusiasts can apply to become an ambassador to help China's joint bid with five mid-Asian countries to seek UNESCO cultural heritage status for the Silk Road.

Ten ambassadors are being recruited to join a 55-day journey jointly staged with more than 30 media representatives to travel the historic road, today's Shanghai Morning Post reported.

Shanghai applicants can dial 021-63529999 to apply.

The finalists will join historians and archeologists on the journey starting east from Xi'an City in northwest China and reaching the west terminal at Rome after going through 15,000 kilometers in eight Asian and European countries.

Those recruited will pay 290,000 yuan (US$42,463) to the organizer to cover the journey's costs.

China expects to submit the application next year with Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan to list the ancient Silk Road for UNESCO World Cultural Heritage protection, the newspaper said.

The 7,000-kilometer-long Silk Road, mainly a trade route linking Asia and Europe, extended from the Chinese cities of Luoyang and Xi'an to Europe via southern and central Asian countries.
