Amber jewelry pieces seized at Pudong
Shanghai Customs recently seized 880 smuggled amber jewelry products which were falsely declared as common ornaments on import documents, authorities announced.
The case occurred on May 21 when customs officers checked imported goods at Pudong airport, noticing that one package, declared to contain 鈥渘ecklaces,鈥 seemed suspicious.
The package contained 60 pieces of amber jewelry products, which were worth far more than their declared value of 1,282.50 yuan (US$180).
According to customs, officers recently seized nine batches of amber jewelry imported from Poland and Lithuania that were declared as cheap ornaments.
Meanwhile, on the same day, customs officers in the Waigaoqiao bonded area returned more than 50 tons of illegally imported solid waste.
The waste, declared as 鈥減olycrystalline silicon鈥 for bonded storage, was found actually to be broken pieces of silicon wafers, silicon discs and silicon particles.
The customs鈥 anti-smuggling department is investigating the case, authorities said.
Given rising public awareness of environmental protection and the country鈥檚 green development drive, China decided to phase out and halt such imports by the end of 2019.
