Amid drill, a real fire breaks out
A fire drill met with the real thing yesterday morning when hundreds of people were evacuated from a building in the Pudong New Area.
The fire broke out in a ninth-floor office building on Jinxiang Road while employees in another building in the same compound were going through an emergency drill.
Security guards said that they had just laid down some barrels with combustible materials burning to imitate a fire scene when the alarm sounded. A ninth-floor apartment caught fire, according to the security guards.
The fire spread to hallways, and all of the ninth floor was engulfed in smoke when the guards rushed upstairs. They were ill-equipped to extinguish the rapidly spreading fire, and it took about 10 fire trucks from the fire department to put it out.
But thanks to the fire drill and the security guards' presence, hundreds of people in the building were evacuated within about 10 minutes. No one was injured.
