Anti-suicide screen doors tested on Line 2

Automatic platform screen doors now being tested in a Metro station in Shanghai have worked smoothly since Thursday, Metro officials said today. They will be installed on other Metro Line 2 stations to prevent suicide jumps after the three-month test proves a success.

Forty anti-suicide screen doors were put on test in Weining Road Station in Changning District, said Lan Tian, an official with the Metro management.

Metro Line 2 stations are not all equipped with the screen doors due to technical bottlenecks. The public has long appealed for effective measures to prevent suicide jumps which increased in recent years.

The new platform screen doors can block people from entering the tracks and slide open only after the train comes to a full stop.

The screen doors in Weining Road Station currently work only in slack hours and will be tested during rush hours next month, the official said.

"So far, they have been running smoothly without a major glitch. We need more time to evaluate their coordination with trains, especially during peak hours," Lan said.
