Arrest in call girl robbery case
A EUROPEAN man has been arrested for robbing a Chinese prostitute, the Shanghai No. 2 Intermediate Prosecutors' Office said yesterday.
The man, whom prosecutors identified as Tom, allegedly forced the woman surnamed Wang to hand over her bank cards and passwords and then withdrew more than 12,000 yuan (US$1,773) from her account, because she refused to move in with him, prosecutors said.
Prosecutors declined to reveal which country Tom is from, but said the 46-year-old had divorced a few years ago and came to Shanghai last year to do some part-time jobs and teach a foreign language.
On the eve of this year's Spring Festival, Tom met Wang, 41, after leaving a bar on Hengshan Road in Xuhui District. Wang, who was accustomed to meeting foreigners in bars, speaks fluent English.
Tom took her home that night and over the next few months Wang often provided sex services to him. Besides paying her regular fee, Tom occasionally gave her extra money since Wang told him she had an ill mother and a daughter, prosecutors said.
Tom gradually fell in love with Wang. He asked her to give up prostitution and live with him.
Wang refused and began to distance herself from the man. She missed a date with Tom one day in May.
On May 30, he invited her over to his residence again and she went the next day.
After sleeping together, Tom became angry about being stood up earlier that month.
Wang wanted to flee but Tom destroyed her clothes. Prosecutors said Tom then ordered Wang to return the extra money he had given her and threatened her with a knife. Wang was forced to give him her two bank cards and passwords, prosecutors said. Tom then tied her up and beat her until she repeated the bank codes over and over, according to prosecutors.
Tom allegedly put her in the bathroom before he left to withdraw the money. Wang freed herself during this period and shouted for help through the bathroom window after wrapping herself in a bath towel.
She was found by a security guard and freed by police.
When Tom returned with the money, he saw the policemen and fled.
He was caught by police the next morning when he came home, prosecutors said.
