Attempted murder suspect on trial

THE man accused of hacking his girlfriend's head dozens of times went on trial for attempted murder today at the Shanghai No.2 Intermediate People's Court.
The suspect Yang Chunfu denied the prosecutors?accusation at court, saying he only knocked his girlfriend's head with the back of the knife blade several times, and he did not want to kill her.
Yang defended himself by saying that he just wanted to teach his girlfriend, surnamed Zhang, a lesson because he suspected she was engaged in prostitution and he loved her very much.
But medical reports confirmed the wounds were made by a knife blade, not its back, heard the court.
Zhang, who did not show up at the court, told prosecutors earlier that the real reason for the attack was that she wanted to break up with him after she learned he was married.
The woman, who was divorced due to her ex-husband's extramarital affair, met Yang last year but decided to break up with him after he admitted he was married as she didn't want to ruin another family, according to prosecutors.
