Authorities warn of traffic clogging for tomb sweeping ceremonies

Brace for another round of traffic congestion on city roads between December 12 and 22 with more than 2.4 million residents expected to visit cemeteries for the upcoming winter solstice, or dongzhi, the city’s civil affairs authorities warned today.

Dongzhi, which literally means “extreme winter,” falls on December 22 this year. It is a time when the Chinese pay their respects to the departed by sweeping their tombs.

The worst affected areas are likely to Jiading, Baoshan, Fengxian and Qingpu districts and the Pudong New Area, where most of the city’s 44 cemeteries are located. The Yueluo Road in Baoshan, the Tanglu Road in Pudong, the Jiasong Rd N. in Jiading as well as some sections and intersections of S2, S4, G50 and S5 highways leading to cemeteries are also likely to be clogged, officials said.

The peak time of traffic will be on December 19, 20 and 22 with many preferring the weekend before dongzhi and the day of dongzhi for tomb sweeping and interring ashes.

Some 1.07 million people are estimated to visit cemeteries in this three days, putting an extra 110,000 vehicles on the roads.

About 24,000 urns are expected to be interred at local cemeteries in this period.
