Baby found dead after mom's fatal fall

A WOMAN suffocated her seven-month-old son before jumping to her death at a residential complex yesterday, police believe.

The woman, 33, lived with her mother-in-law, 64, in a 20th-floor apartment in a modern complex on Luochuan Road E. in Zhabei District. Her husband is working in Japan.

Neighbors said the mother-in-law had been out shopping for food about 6am and returned to find a note from her daughter-in-law saying she had left with the infant.

She called the police and the woman's body was found lying on the top of the apartment building's entrance hall about an hour later. The body of the child was found in the house.

Police have not disclosed the identities of the dead and said the case was still under investigation.

The woman is thought to have jumped from a ninth-floor corridor. Police found footmarks on the windowsill.

Neighbors said the woman was a non-local who had come to study at a local university some years ago.

Neighborhood officials said the dead woman didn't often socialize with other residents.
