Baby girl abandoned for congenital heart disease
TODAY, while most Chinese are observing the Lantern Festival with family reunions, a 2-month-old girl is waiting for her parents in a Shanghai hospital after she was found abandoned on Saturday.
The Songjiang District Central Hospital said it has called the police and is contacting the civil affairs department for help.
"The girl has a congenital heart disease and needs a surgery. This may be the reason why she was abandoned," said an unnamed hospital official. "Her heart disease is not critical and a surgery can be arranged at a right time to cure her completely."
Zeng Ni, a spokesman for Songjiang District Public Security Bureau, said they have posted the girl information and her photo on their official Weibo, a Chinese version of Twitter, to draw her parents' attention.
"We want the parents to take the baby home soon," Zeng said. "Her disease is curable and parental care is important for a baby."
The baby was found around 7:30am on Saturday in the hospital's pediatric ward. She was wearing a red cloak with a red bag stuffed with her clothes and belongings.
They checked the hospital's surveillance video and found a couple carrying a baby and a red bag to the hospital and left empty-handed.
Police said they are waiting for the parents to contact them and instead of sending her to a children's nursing home.
Lawyers said abandoning children is illegal in China and parents are put into jail if their child is seriously injured or dead after being abandoned. Most parents are given a warning by police if they take the child home and promise to take care of him or her.
