Baby monkey discovers family life
A BABY golden monkey is learning about family life at Shanghai Zoo.
Baobao is living with cousin Xinxin and aunt Beibei in a cage next to its bigger family, as part of an adaptation program organized by zoo staff, the Oriental Morning Post reported.
After the baby was born last March its mother could not feed it and so it was reared initially by humans.
It became closer emotionally to humans than other golden monkeys which did not augur well for its future.
To help it adapt to family life, zoo staff moved Baobao into a cage next to the golden monkeys family when it was six months old. From the cage, Baobao could see family life and later Xinxin was moved into the same cage and then Beibei.
The adaptation is going well, staff said.
Getting on well with Xinxin and Beibei, Baobao has learned to swing through the cage, eat food and avoid aggressive older monkeys. In about a month, Baobao will move in with the rest of the family.
