Bare land blooming lovely now
MORE than 10 plots of idle reserve land in Shanghai have been turned into seas of flowers.
Covering some 1.6 million square meters and located in Changning, Minhang and Qingpu districts and the Pudong New Area, they feature flowers such as calliopsis and zinnia.
“These flowers are mainly autumn blossoms,” said Xu Xiaobo, deputy director of the Shanghai Greenery Management Station.
There is also a wetland on a plot of reserve land east of the Panwen Road in Qingpu District.
It is planted with aquatic species such as calamus and bulrush.
The wetland covers more than 20,000 square meters and even attracts egrets and moorhen.
Nearby residents proposed the planting program, said Xu. The areas were barren, while dust clouds blemished the city image.
District authorities are now making lists of more reserve land and working out technical requirements and suitable plants, according to the Shanghai Greenery and Public Sanitation Bureau.
