Blitz inspection targets unlawful food makers
LOCAL quality inspectors last night found several food manufacturers producing food in filthy environment and these companies will be fined or even shut down.
The inspectors from the Shanghai Bureau of Quality and Technical Supervision are also investigating if these companies used illegal additives in food production.
At the Shanghai Shenyi Food Co in Zhabei District, the inspectors found workers were making steamed buns in a small, dirty workshop with puddles of water on the floor and dough piled on a table without any hygiene protection.
The inspectors said they noticed the company's problem last month and ordered it to improve before a deadline of April 20. But last night's blitz check showed that the company did nothing to address its problem.
"We didn't find the company's sales record, which is rather suspicious," said Liu Zhenhua, an official with the bureau. "And we saw food additives in the workshop, too, but the workers couldn't tell where the additives came from."
Officials said they may revoke the company's business license.
Meanwhile, the factory of Shanghai Yijian Bean Products Co in Putuo District also showed similar problems. Bean curd was made in a small, ill-ventilated room with a lot of flies buzzing around.
The company owner said they began making bean curd in the room last year and their products were sold in some wet markets in the district.
