Blueprints for Wusong Smart City
Global architects and designers have been invited to make a blueprint for Wusong Smart City, which is being developed from north Shanghai’s former iron and steel industry base.
Baoshan District government launched the global soliciting campaign yesterday to absorb the world’s leading planning concepts and make the site a demonstration of industrial transformation and urban renewal.
The redevelopment plans will focus on three initial projects — a 9-square-kilometer former stainless steel production line, the 12-sq-km Central Steel Park and another steel workshop which will become the Wusong campus of Shanghai University’s Academy of Fine Arts.
“Wusong is the biggest region among Shanghai’s five major industrial bases being transformed,” said Wang Zhongmin, director of the planning and natural resources bureau of Baoshan.
“It is the region to showcase Shanghai’s modern iron steel industry and the core site for Baoshan to cap the city’s ambition to become a scientific innovation center with global influence,” Wang said.
The Wusong area in suburban Baoshan District, known as the cradle of China’s modern industry, was home to the renowned Baosteel Group and more than 300 other metal refineries and chemical engineering plants dating back to the 1930s.
