Boat crash girl compensation wrangle

NEGOTIATIONS over compensation are continuing between a boat company and the family of a Shanghai native girl who died in a boating accident on Qiandao Lake a week ago.

The two sides have yet to reach agreement over compensation after four meetings, xinmin.cn reported.

The girl's family is asking for 1.8 million yuan (US$263,408.4), nearly three times the 620,000-yuan offered by the company.

A representative of the victim's family, surnamed Zhu, said the family will take the case to court if the negotiations are not settled.

Ye Fei, a female student from Shanghai Normal University, was killed on the lake in Chun'an County on May 28. Another tourist on the same boat was pronounced brain dead two days later, according to the Oriental Morning Post. Twelve others were injured.

Ye, 22, had gone to Qiandao Lake with a classmate for the three-day Dragon Boat Festival.

The Chun'an tourism bureau has been mediating the compensation talks, a bureau official surnamed Wang told Xinmin.cn.

He said in the wake of the accident, the Chun'an tourism authority is launching a safety campaign in the boat industry.
