Bobo tackles phone fraudsters

SHANGHAI police is using the attraction of the city's funniest guy to remind the public to beware of telephone frauds.

Advertisements featuring Zhou Libo, or Bobo, a stand-up comic who speaks Shanghainese and pokes fun at everyone in what he calls "Shanghai-Style Clean Talk," will feature on the mobile television on buses, according to Shanghai Morning Post today.

Zhou will perform all the roles in the advertisements and use three dialects to make fun of swindlers and raise people's awareness.

Most telephone swindlers pose as China Telecom staff and claim huge sums are owed, according to the report. Some even ask victims to deposit large sums of money in a "safe account" to cooperate with anti-money laundering campaigns.

The police said such public service advertisements had received good results before. A total of 3,271 telephone frauds were prevented since the beginning of this year and this, they said, was largely due to the circulation of an anti-fraud advertisement.
