Body of drowned sailor found
THE body of a Chilean sailor who fell into the Yangtze River has been found near Chongming Island eight days after the accident occurred, the Shanghai-based Yangtze River marine police said yesterday.
A Chinese sailor surnamed Xie on a shipping boat in Jiang°?su Province spotted the body floating about 50 meters from the Wangjiahe pier to the south of the island about 10am on Saturday. Police dragged the body ashore, the shipping police said.
The body was identified as Aliaga Oyarce Luis Dante, a 50-year-old man working for a Chilean freighter named Donraul. The sailor's colleagues made the identification, police said.
Dante fell overboard about 23:55pm on May 1 when boarding the freighter. The ship was docked at Chongming shipyard for regular maintenance. Dante had spent the night ashore with a 29-year-old sailor in a local bar. On their way back, Dante fell through the gap between the pier and the ship, police said.
"He might have been drunk and lost his balance," said Yu Ming, a police official.
The city's exit-entry authority will help the freighter's owners transport the body back to Chile, police said.
