Bogus doctor left boy impaired
A FOUR-YEAR-OLD boy was left with the intellectual abilities of a 16-month-old child after suffering an allergic reaction while being given antibiotics intravenously by an unlicensed doctor.
Jia Mingyi, a farmer from Anhui Province, was sentenced to nine months in prison and fined 2,000 yuan (US$300) for illegal medical practice and for not having emergency facilities - which led to a delay in treatment for the child, Songjiang District prosecutors said yesterday.
Last November, Gao Zhuliang brought her son to Jia's clinic in the city's Songjiang District as the boy had been coughing for several days.
Jia gave the boy antibiotics intravenously, but failed to check whether the child was allergic to the medication.
Seconds into the treatment, the boy turned pale and started twitching, according to a statement from the court.
Because of the absence of emergency facilities, 15 minutes passed before the boy finally received treatment at a local hospital. This delay led to the degeneration of his intellectual abilities.
According to an examination by the local authority and hospital, the boy's intellectual abilities had degenerated to that of a 16-month-old child.
Weng Yijuan, a doctor who treated the boy, said it is too early to say if he had suffered permanent brain damage.
