Boy, 8, foils attack by armed apartment raiders

THANKS to the calmness of an eight-year-old boy, two armed men who broke into a neighborhood in Minhang District ended up being stuck in the middle of a river surrounded by security guards.

The two men were now in custody, Minhang District police said yesterday.

About 9pm on Wednesday, the men followed two women to an apartment in the Blue Harbor complex on Longming Road. When one of the woman opened the door, the men brandished knives, forced them into the home and demanded money, said Kong Xiangchuan, captain of the security guards of the complex.

The boy, who has not been named, was at home before his mother and her friend returned and hid from the intruders.

"The burglars didn't find the kid at first," Kong told Shanghai Daily yesterday. "Somehow he sneaked to the security intercom phone and called us for help."

The burglars heard the intercom noise, panicked and fled.

Seven security guards rushed to the building after the call and blocked every exit. The men jumped into the creek beside the building, but got stuck in heavy silt in the middle.

The pair, with no fight left in them, surrendered when police officers arrived.
