Boy battered by stepmom receives brain surgery

A four-year-old boy who lost part of his skull and suffered serious brain injury, allegedly caused by his stepmother's beating, received surgery to repair the skull loss and injured brain tissues today.

It could take seven to ten days for Yu Zhongbao of Henan Province to emerge from a critical observation period after the risky surgery. In addition he would need three to six-month-long rehabilitation to regain proper brain and bodily functions, said doctors from Shanghai Children's Medical Center.

In addition to the life-threatening skull loss, Yu also lost two thirds of his right brain hemisphere, as a result from severe hemorrhaging caused by the beating.

"The loss of the right brain tissue has resulted in paralysis of the left body," said Dr Bao Nan, Yu's leading surgeon. "We cleared up the accumulated water on his brain and repaired the damaged brain tissues in the surgery. The tissues may grow back to some extent under medication, rehabilitation and his own brain development."

Yu, whose mother left him soon after birth, was raised by his father and stepmother, who repeatedly beat him according to his grandparents.

The tragic beating took place on April 8, when the stepmother allegedly beat Yu so badly that he lost consciousness.
