Boyfriend charged with triple killings

A MAN killed his girlfriend and her parents after he had lost all the money he'd been given to buy an apartment, Xuhui District prosecutors said yesterday.

They have approved the arrest of Wu Jielin, a 29-year-old local native, and he has been charged with murder.

On April 3, Wu Bei and her father were found dead in an apartment in Yuejiyuan residential community on Guiping Road. Wu's mother's body was found in a nearby residential community.

The police caught Wu Jielin, the dead girl's boyfriend, just 16 hours later.

He and Wu Bei, a colleague in a real estate agent's office, had become lovers in 2005.

Their parents approved of their plans to get married once they had bought an apartment and Wu Jielin's parents gave him 600,000 yuan (US$87,804) for that, he told prosecutors.

But instead of buying an apartment he invested in the stock market. Then, after his investment had shrunk to 100,000 yuan, he lost the rest on online soccer gambling.

On March 22, Wu Bei asked Wu Jielin to sign a property deal. Fearing he would be found out, Wu Jielin decided to kill her, prosecutors allege.

He strangled her, prosecutors said, and later stabbed and strangled her father when he came looking for her.

Later, after telling Wu Bei's mother, who lived elsewhere, her husband was in hospital and her daughter was looking after him, he strangled her when she began to suspect he was lying, it is alleged.
