Bubbles and water from potholes puzzle workers

UNIDENTIFIED bubbles and water were seen emerging from potholes in a 10-meter-long section of an asphalt road in Changning District last night.

The phenomenon began around 11:30pm yesterday on Wanghangdu Road near Kaixuan Road. Witnesses said warm water from the ground surged up to 30 centimeters high.

"I pass here every day and have never seen such a scene since the road was paved two years ago," said a nearby resident surnamed Yao.

Repairmen from the water department rushed to the spot but didn't find any malfunction of the underground water pipes.

At about 3am, workers from the drainage department and the gas department arrived. However, the water and bubbles kept coming up from the potholes even though they closed the valves of all the pipes.

Later, experts found a discarded drainage well under the pavement. It was three meters deep and built in the 1980s. They believed the bubbles might be methane gas from the well.

Investigation and repair work were still continuing, officials said.
