Bus smashed in attack
AN inter-province bus which pulled over on a street in Hongkou District to pick up passengers was attacked on Monday night by a group of people who emerged from a white minivan.
Witnesses said the bus driver and passengers were scared to death when the 10 windows of the bus were smashed in just a few minutes.
The suspects fled the scene at Kuizhao Road near Guangyue Road before the police arrived. No one was injured, Hongkou District police said yesterday.
Police said the driver drove the bus away soon after the brief investigation, during which "he was uncooperative."
"It's hard for us to further investigate because the driver did not give us any information about the attackers," an officer said.
The attack allegedly grew out of vicious competition, according to the city's transport authorities.
The bus belongs to a qualified vehicle rental company but is prohibited from hailing passengers on the streets, said an official surnamed Ni from the Shanghai Transport and Port Authority.
Ni said conflicts happened from time to time among independent bus operators, especially during the Spring Festival transport peak.
