Cabbie dies, run over by driver after tiff
A TAXI driver died after being knocked down and run over by the driver of a van after a dispute yesterday morning in downtown Shanghai, police said.
The middle-aged taxi driver, a local resident surnamed Tao, died at the scene. The van driver, surnamed Liu, was taken away by police for questioning.
The incident happened about 10:50am on Tianshan Road near Furongjiang Road after the taxi driver was seen chasing the van, according to a witness. The two vehicles had had a slight collision before the conflict, police said.
A light turned red at an intersection and the vehicles stopped. The cabbie got out and began arguing with the van driver, police said.
The cabbie was "trying to pull the driver out of the van while they were at the intersection," a witness said in a report on local television news.
When the light turned green, the van started to drive away, hitting and driving over the cabbie, police said.
A security guard at a nearby business said the van stopped after driving about 10 meters. The guard said the van driver, who appeared to be in his 20s, did not show a drivers license at the scene.
Police said they were classifying the case as a traffic accident for now, but were continuing to gather information.
