Calligraphy teacher charged with child molestation
A CALLIGRAPHY teacher who allegedly touched his seven-year-old student's breasts was arrested and charged with child molestation, Baoshan District prosecutors said today.
The 56-year-old suspect, surnamed Li, allegedly sexually assault his seven-year-old student, surnamed Yang, at about 7pm on July 22 while he was teaching a calligraphy night class at a training center in Baoshan District.
Prosecutors said Li pretended to correct Yang's writing posture during the class and intentionally touched her breasts for a long time. He also talked obscenely to the girl in the name of "teaching her right from wrong."
Yang was too frightened to resist Li and kept silent during the sexual assault. She was also warned by her "kind and respected" teacher not to tell her parents after the class was dismissed.
Yang's parents reported the matter to the police after their daughter cried about the traumatic experience after arriving home. Police detained Li the next day.
Prosecutors said Li had been teaching calligraphy for many years and was a renowned teacher trusted by many parents to instill an ancient Chinese nature in their children through the art of calligraphy.
Unlike schools, after-class training centers had looser controls over teachers and parents were advised to pay more attention to their children's behavior after attending such classes, said prosecutors.
