Cameras sold on TV fail tests

DIGITAL cameras sold on TV shopping channels recorded the most serious quality problems after an inspection by industrial and commercial authorities in Shanghai, officials said today.

Famous brands which failed the tests included Japan-based Casio and Sanyo, said the Shanghai Industrial and Commercial Administrative Bureau.

The bureau tested five brands of digital cameras sold on TV shopping channels, and three were found to have quality problems.

They included a Casio EX-Z33 digital camera sold by Oriental CJ Shopping Co Ltd and a Sanyo VPC-S1275EX camera sold by Acorn International, which had unqualified resolution ratio and color rendition.

The bureau said that they used cheap optical lenses, leading to low-quality images. The products also didn't have an auto-focus function.

Other products, such as bedding, telephones and jewelry, were also on the blacklist. Officials said TV shopping companies sometimes advertised low-quality products.

Consumer complaints about TV shopping have soared in recent years. Last year the number of complaints increased by 245 percent since 2008, said the bureau.
